Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect
When a family member moves into a nursing home facility, you expect that they will be well cared for. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. There are several types of elderly neglect have become more and more common, such as:
- Bed sores / decubitus ulcers
- Bed rail – injury and death
- Burns – due to smoking and bathing
- Dehydration
- Falls, or residents being dropped, resulting in physical injury
- Infection due to staff neglect
- Malnutrition
- Medication error
- Medical errors
- Physical abuse
- Insufficient protection from physical abuse or sexual abuse
Often nursing home residents are too at risk to elderly abuse because of deteriorating physical or mental condition. If you have a loved one in nursing home care, it is best to be on the look out for signs of abuse no matter how much you trust or like the nursing home and it's staff. Watch for rapid weight loss, bruising, bedsores, sever mood changes, and the appearance that your family member seems over medicated or sedated.
